Brinkman’s Statement on Indigenous Reconciliation

Brinkman is committed to advancing our collective journey towards Indigenous reconciliation. We recognize our unique responsibility within the natural resource industry, working with over 1000 young workers in remote regions and traditional territories across Canada. Brinkman embraces the opportunity for learning and the mutual and collective healing that accompanies a reconciliation-centered approach to social and ecological stewardship.

WE RECOGNIZE the prolonged historical and continued oppression and harm experienced by Indigenous populations through colonization and existing colonial practices. Indigenous reconciliation is a long-term process of learning, evolving and relationship- building. Our goal is to embed reconciliation in all of our activities, to expand and deepen our journey and role in reconciliation, guided by continual learning and listening to Indigenous voices.

WE EMBRACE our role as business community members to enact the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's (TRC) Call to Action # 92 as it relates to our industry and activities.

TRC Call to Action # 92. We call upon the corporate sector in Canada to adopt the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples as a reconciliation framework and to apply its principles, norms, and standards to corporate policy and core operational activities involving Indigenous peoples and their lands and resources. (see Appendix)

WE AFFIRM Indigenous Peoples' right to fully realized and supported historical and modern treaties, and Indigenous title and jurisdiction on traditional territories. We affirm Indigenous Peoples' right to self-determination, as defined in UNDRIP, and uphold Indigenous self- determination as a guiding principle in shared land and forest management decision- making.

WE RECOGNIZE Indigenous Peoples as the original and rightful stewards of traditional lands and their encompassing natural and cultural values. We seek to empower and uphold Indigenous leadership and community decision-making in land stewardship and achievement of economic autonomy. We support Indigenous partners and communities in building land management and economic capacity, in accordance with their aspirations and needs.

WE ARE COMMITTED to deepening our learning and resulting principles, protocols and practices as they relate to Indigenous Reconciliation, and view this company statement as an evergreen document, to be amended accordingly.
